When personal computers initially took off, hard disk drives that we use today were not the storage standard. At that time Floppy disks were used for storage of files and programs. And many PC’s came with two floppy disk drives and therefore two drive letters namely A: and B: were reserved by default for them.
Today windows have evolved and had a majority of PC’s run a version of Windows OS. C: has been used as a primary drive letter since decades now and though drive letters A: and B: are no longer reserved for floppy, changing the primary drive letter to A: now will require third-party software developers around the world to make changes to their software.
Good news is that if you want to use drive letters A: and B: for your drives other than C:, then you surely can. Follow the instructions below.
Press Win+R to open run.
Then enter diskmgmt.msc and press enter
You would see something like this:
Then right click the drive you want to change the drive letter of.
Click on the option that says - “change drive letter and paths”
Select the assigned drive letter in the box and click on the change button you see below.
Now select the desired drive letter from the drop-down menu and press OK or YES on everything else that comes afterward.
And voila! It is done.
Go look in your File Explorer(My Computer/This PC)
Thanks.
